Great Compline

The Great Compline, or „Apodeipnon" in Greek is the service performed after the evening meal and concludes the cycle of daily prayers. It's origin is probably in the evening prayers that every Christian is reciting before going to bed.

The Great Compline is performed in the Monasteries, Monday through Thursday during the Great Lent, in each of the weeks of Lent and in the first three days of Holy Week. In the other days the Small Compline is performed. In the current parish practice this service is performed generally on Monday nights.

The Great Compline assimilates elements from Vespers( thanksgiving prayers for the day just passed) and from the Midnight Service (the imitation of the ever-vigil of the angels) blessing the critical moment of passing from day to night, allowing the faithful to adapt to the necessities of the night worship.
